Darien Dey is a PhD student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her research explores the history of Black education in the British West Indies, particularly in Guyana, where she grew up. She is broadly interested in examining how African-Guyanese communities built and sustained educational practices that overlapped with and challenged colonial schooling during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She relies on archival materials, oral histories, and the built environment to recover the experiences and perspectives of African- Guyanese teachers and students often absent from the colonial record.
